The rain dances have worked!

What a summer so far!! But its raining now!!

It's been remarkable season for lots of reasons. We have had 5 heat waves and very little rain which is unusual to say the least. I have been reflecting on past summers with storms, rain and resilient campers. 10 years ago I took a photo of our thermometer and posted it on face book. The temperature was just 25 degrees. It’s a bit scary really because that summer that temperature was remarkable and Facebook worthy. Now we think that’s reasonable - almost cool.

Everything is very dry.

We had a visit from the prefecture fire department the other day and while barbeques and campfires have been banned for a while, there is now a restriction on the use of gas cookers and we have set up a secure zone where they can be used. It’s been quite nice really communal cooking. Many thanks to all our campers who have conformed to the new rules.

We are now just waiting for some rain which I suppose is the same for most of Europe. When it does eventually come it will mean muddy floors. But a small price to pay for some much-needed moisture. My garden is a desert, and the trees are shedding their leaves in stress.

We have been full (“camping complet”) since the beginning of July and it looks set to remain that way till the last week in August. As you can imagine we are on our last legs but are always buoyed by lovely campers and their stories, their children and dogs.

Children find friends on the camp site. Language is no barrier to play. I remember my first camping experience in France. I would have been about 9 years old. I met a French girl, Claire Pelletier. We were pen pals for years as kids. I don’t know what happened to her in the end as we lost touch. All the letters started with” Cher Claire”. I wrote to her in French allegedly and she wrote back in English. I have a little dream that one day she will rock up at the campsite. Long shot I know !!

Maybe some of the kids who have met each other here over the summer will stay in touch and remember their hot sunny holiday in Brittany. So as we approach September we have made memories of this extraordinary season, and I hope that all our guests have too.

We will remain open until the 26th September, then it's time for our holidays. I can’t wait.
