Don’t cast a clout till May is out!
When camping in May I find its easy to get sucked into the feeling it's summer. The temperature raises a bit, flowers are blooming, the blossoms out, the birds are tweeting and nest building. Yet the nights can be cold with the occasional frost and the weather can be inclement some days.
I had my shorts on the other day as we hit 20 degrees. It felt fabulous with the sun on our backs, just a thing to raise the spirits, yet as I say it's still necessary to have the warm clothes in the car and extra blankets in the tent. May campers are hardy and do tend to follow this rule. I also make sure that there are plenty of extra blankets and hot water bottles in the glamping tents to keep guest’s cosy.
We are busy getting ready to be busy. We have finally got round to starting to tidy the wood and rake those leaves. I will say there are rather a lot of them but what would you expect. Raking the leaves in the wood has become a bit of a standing joke with us as it sounds like an impossible task. It does get finished in the end though.
When I look at the jobs on the list, I always think of the leaves in the wood as the worse one. Miserably as I am writing this, I have remembered another one to come: cleaning the tennis court …….
Anyway, despite the weather and the leaves this time of year is splendid, I love spring, the colours, the new fife, it is a great time to be outdoors and on holiday.
In France in May there are rather a lot of bank holidays, one each week in fact. This weekend we are welcoming many athletes who are taking part in an ultra trial, there are over 1000 participants so we are busy.
We are also having a coronation party on Sunday which I am looking forward to. Any excuse for a party and catch up.
As well as being busy getting ready to be busy we have tried to take some time away from the campsite as we know that in a few weeks’ time that will be difficult. We have been walking, to the cinema and to the pub. We have found a proper pub in France with a great Breton landlady, Elise, who keeps fabulous beer. I will be recommending it to customers.
To cap it all we have discovered handmade pies in France made by a chap and his wife from Lancashire…. Oh, and they deliver them to the pub on a Friday……
Whilst I love the French way of life and embrace it (aperos and proper mealtimes to name a few), very occasionally it's comforting to have a taste of home, pies, walks and beer.
So come camping for a marvellous May but keep your woolly socks and hats in the car, you might need them.
